What is Arctic Tent?
Arctic Tent was designed by two of the world's best explorers Mikhail Malakhov of Russian Federation and Richard Weber of Canada. They used this design during their successful attempt on foot to North Pole and back from Canadian Ellesmere Island. Their expedition was not supported by aircrafts so they selected and mostly custom made the lighest gear available.
What's New ?
On April 2002, I will join an international team for a ski descent on Mt. Ararat(5165 m.) and Teknik Malakhov will be tested on high altitude for the first time. The team will spend 2 nights on the mountain and climb to Ararat's Summit AT ski . Johannes Linorter of Austria is now busy with the organisation of the expedition.

Pattern and sewing information will be added as a new page soon.

My new tent ''Teknik Malakhov''
Here you can find the photos from my new tent. Dr. Malakhov advised me on the dimensions and I bought some fabric from Cameroon Ballons in the US to sew the tent. I am very satisfied with the result.
Please have a look at Photo Page to see pictures of my tent '' Teknik Malakhov''

''Teknik Malakhov'' is a 2-3person single wall tent also accepts an inner tent if I will have time to sew it. Edge base lenght is 130 cm. So, the floor is about 4.3 meter sq. Very comfortable for 2 but can also accommodate 3 people for a weekend. It is about 2 kilograms excluding pegs and stakes.

Why an Arctic Tent is better for ski expeditions?
1) The tent has no frame, frame tents might be a headache if you damage or lose the frame. Pitching an Arctic Tent only requires ski poles and a ski as centre pole. There is no tent pole as strong as a ski pole. You can use tree branches to pitch the tent and it is also possible to hang from a tree in a forest
2) It is completely storm-proof.
3) There are no zippers at the entry. So, don't expect a failure at the door.
4) The tied-up chimney is at the right place. It is centered and on the top. It makes the ventilation perfect. Most of the tents sold by well known companies don't have a better ventilation and you get wet inside due to the condensation from your breath.
5) It is very easy to use a stove in the tent, you can hang everything on center pole and light the stove on the tent floor. All the moisture will be ejected via chimney.
6) It is very comfortable, the walls are 90 cm , roof is 150 cm high at the peak.
7) It is a hexagonal structure and very aerodynamic

A note about Peary's Claim for 1909 North Pole Expedition
It was a rainy night when Dr. Malakhov and I were sitting at a table discussing the ideas behind their gear designs. He explained all the equipment and strategy they are using in arctic expeditions. After a few days of disscussion with him. I couldn't believe Peary's claim anymore. I don’t believe that Peary reached the Geographical North Pole. Historians like to create heros in the history and Peary was one of them. If you check National Geographic Magazine you will find a successful Arctic Expedition supported by planes started somewhere close to the North Pole but called Trans-Arctic Expedition from Siberia to Canada. In fact, The IAP team was supported many times on the ice and when they understood the reality they send the dogs back and get the canoes to paddle to Canada. Suprisingly, the team was declared heros and Weber-Malakhov’s 1995 successful unsupported expedition was declared by three sentences in the January 1996 issue, where the supposedly scientific body claimed that their success was due to eating chocolate-covered truffles. Even today’s’ modern explorers, such as Will Steger can't do a successful dogsled expedition in Arctic region by using all high-tech gears, so there is no reason to accept Peary's claim.
